What are 'thumbs'

When I transfer photos from my PC to a disc it asks if I want to transfer 'thumbs'. What are they and do I need them ? I have Windows XP.

Thumbnails=small pictures of the actual picture/photo/file usually.

they are the opposable digits on each of your hands!

the thumbs file is a file created when you view folders full of pictures, you don't need to copy it (but if you do the little thumbnail pictures will load faster the first time you view the folder)

For some reason, when I click on a Thumbnail, my PC can't open it. Is it OK to delete them ?
