What's important is how many things are connected at once, as a general rule of thumb 4 or 5 devices. (phones, faxes, modems all count)
if you exceed the amount of devices some all all of them may not ring properly and other services on the line (call waiting, caller ID and even ADSL) may not work properly or at all.

A ringer equivalency number (REN) of 1 represents the loading effect of a single "traditional" telephone ringing circuit. All BABT approved devices are marked with a REN however, such being the vagaries of REN testing procedures, modern devices may be marked 1 when their real REN may be far lower e.g. externally-powered digital phones may have a real REN as low as 0.1
