old nikon coolpix 3100 not working please help !

i have a digital nikon since 2002 and its fine apart from the fact that when i try to take a photo the little flash light at the top blinks red and then it turns off , does anyone know whats wrong with it ? if u need any detailed stuff bout it i can say

you're sure that's not just the thingy that does the auto-focussing? If so, and your photos are in focus, then I guess no problem.

no thats the thing i click the shutter then lens goes back in and turns off doesnt take a photo

oh - in that case I don't know but it sounds like a big problem! tbh 8 years is quite old for a digital camera these days and maybe you should think about renewing. I suspect repairing an old one would cost more. But someone else may be able to offer more helpful advice, sorry.
