Dvd Burner issue

Mt dyd burner says 'insert dvd+r/Rw or dvd-r/rw' yet will not recognise dvd-r of any brand. Any ideas? I can use dvd+r no problem and will usually stick to these but have been given a gift of a stack of -r.
