I have the latest version (6.4).

How do I stop the words I search for appearing as buttons on the toolbar? I've tried right-clicking on them and choosing 'Hide ... button', I've tried 'Clear search history'.

I wouldnt recommend Google toolbar, it's invasive and slows things down

I've never found any benefits to using toolbars. Used to have 'Yahoo toolbar' But no longer.
Try removing the bar alltogether (you can reload it again if you feel the need) and see what effect it has on performance.

right click on buttons & select hide.

I find the Google toolbar very useful, which is why I have it.

Anyway, thanks for the suggestion Tamborine, but unfortunately I have tried that and it doesn't work.
