HD Televisions

I am rather confused about HD televisions. Is it a fact that every television will have to be HD once the system is digital ? Also, does it mean that we will all have to pay approximately £10 per month for the HD channel ?
Sorry to sound so thick but I have heard so many different stories.

Many people currently use a non-HD ready TV with digital by plugging a freeview box into the back of their TV.
Even when the analogue signal is switched off this set up will still work.
So even when ONLY digital is available you will still be able to watch Freeview by plugging a Freeview box into the back of a non-HD TV.
Note that Sky and Virgin are ALREADY DIGITAL and many people are happily watching them with a non-HD ready TV.
As someone has said digital and HD are NOT the same thing.
Digital can currently be picked up by a Freeview box, and this is NOT in HD.

While Sky charge an extra £10 a month for HD I believe you pay no extra for HD with Virgin.
And with a Freesat box (BBC/ITV) you can pick up HD channels for nothing extra.
I think Sky's £10 a month price for HD was just another way of them charging more per month (which is why I refuse to pay it).
