but how do I delete the contents of the drop down search box at the top left hand side of my screen - it used to just about reach the end of the screen and any extra entries would knock the bottom entries off. It also used to have a 'delete searches' (or something similiar) option too but now I can't get to the bottom of the box to see if it is still there. Hope this makes sense.

try pressing the down arrow key to scroll down. when it highlights the previous searches you should be able to right click, then delete.
actually, once they're highlighted you can just hit the delete button.

Tried both of them - the delete one does nothing and when I scoll down it does not show the bottom right hand corner of the drop down box where the delete option lives. It's not the end of the world but it is really irritating.
if you have a google toolbar, look for the blue wrench on the right hand side, and untick search history
