BLACK SCREEN OF DEATH!!!

My partner is in a foul mood so please help.... He turns on his computer, the screen goes as far as the log on screen then goes black, he can still move the cursor though, he tries to put it in safe mode and still the black screen is there, he has tried using a product recovery cd rom and still nothing, it comes up with hit R so he does, then it advises to type EXIT which again he does and again the same thing, this blasted black screen. Any suggestions what might be wrong with it please?

reboot and press F8 - pc should go into safe mode.

try removing the battery if it's a laptop kat, wait a few minutes then put it back in

I went swimming! thats why he's mad at me and I didnt call him on my way back either, with the computer problems I suppose I compounded the problems.

Tried putting it in safe mode and all it does is come up black still...

No, its not a laptop Bobbi... We have tried rebooting it with no luck and no I didnt try and teach it the backstroke! lol
