If your mobile is on pay as you go can it still receive text messages if you have no credit left?

Yes.
Depends who's paying for it....

If one of your friends wants to send you an SMS, then you will received it but, if you are subscribed to a test message service e.g. from your football team or whatever where you actually pay for the SMS, then you won't receive it...
Some pay as you go phones become deactivated if you do not add any credit for a certain number of months, so you would no longer receive texts or calls.

As above - and more are doing it lately....best to replace the SIM with a new one,as you can have a hard time even getting it re-activated!
