Why can't my PC detect my camcorder?

I have a JVC GR-D260 and I bought a firewire hoping it would improve the quality of my capturing from my old analogue camcorder, but none of the four video editing programs I have can detect it. I have run a diagnostic and the computer says the IEEE 1394 firewire card is working perfectly, the camcorder is working, the lead is plugged in to both... What am I doing wrong?

Any suggestions? Are there drivers I need or something?

Thanks, Phil

I'm kind of confused. I've never come across an analogue camcorder with a firewire port.
Do you mean that you've bought an external firewire capture device?

Plus, you might like to post more details like: the OS you are running and which Video Editing software you are using.
Are you sure the camcorder works with firewire. A check of the spec does not mention this only usb interface.
I'm even more confused since downloading the manual, according to which, this model is a Mini-DV camcorder, so I don't get the bit about "my old analogue camcorder" at all.
When camera connected, can you see entries in Task Manager?

The 270/290 DV Cam does take a DVD cable (which is 1394, ilink or firewire) It's in manual, under editing page 44. I assume you are sure you have this connection? Vista has a few problems with video capture, XP should be no problem.
Try MovieMaker .. import ...etc
Switch camera on, select a vid and pause it. Plug into firewire connector.
