my monitor normally has a blue background, but occassionaly, when I start up, I get a poor pastel lilac colour. I can live with it, but is there a fault or is this common?

Hmm, sounds like a fault - my old CRT monitor had similar colour issues due to a loose connection in the power cable. Give it a wiggle (carefully) and see if the colour changes.
Looks like you are losing one of the three colour phases. It won't fix itself.

thanks for the answers. I've since been told to simply switch the monitor off and back on. This worked fine. I believe its called "degassing" or something!
