Yes that is correct, safe mode starts the computer with just the bare minimum things working to enable it to start, you will not be able to access your homepage or play sounds or do most things in safe mode, it's designed for troubleshooting, not for using the computer normally.
When you installed malwarebytes it would have put an icon on the desktop, when you start in safe mode that icon will still be there, just double click on that to start malwarebytes and then select run full scan, don't bother trying to do anything else while in safe mode, you are only there to run the scan.
If you have the proper free version installed it will scan and then offer to remove any problems without asking you to pay, if it asks you to pay anything you either have a rougue version installed or you have installed the full, non free, version.
(incidentally, just as a thought,but are you sure it was asking you to pay and not just saying you may donate if you want to)
