At a friend's they were playing background music of very different styles and eras and when I asked if it was a mix CD he said he gets it from Spotify. Any advice on how to go about this, pitfalls anything?

I love Spotify and use the free version. Now you have to be invited to join up, but they are currently offering 20 hours a month without invitation.
No pitfalls, no drawbacks except for the odd advert. Try it!

Supposedly an invitation subscription mp3 music download site.
A few friends use it, works ok.

Spotify is brilliant, but you have to apply for membership. It took a few months for mine to come through. Just apply on the home page.

It's great, but other have said unless you go for the paid for version (which is worth it if you use it) you are restricted to limited usage or need to be invited.

(and they have closed the backdoor which used to let you get round the invite only part of it:( )

Thanks guys esp hc it does seem to be currently free and I've created an account just like that. Now to try and use it!
How helpful this site can be at times!
albags,

It's not a download site, it's a legal streaming site.
Yes, the best part of it is that is totally legal and the copyright royalties are paid.
I love the radio bit where I can choose the style of music and the era. It plays stuff I'd long forgotten.
You can make playlists too.
What are you doing when you are listening, then?
Downloading data.
no, it's delivering data, there is a difference.
Sending .. Receiving .. Downloading.
If information is arriving at your PC from an external (remote) source .. that is downloading.
You can even save the data that is streamed to you. That is downloading.
Splitting hairs again.
Now set your soundcard to record what comes out of your speakers and bingo! lots of free albums and tracks for free.

I can't see Spotify lasting too long, so make the most of it while you can.
Why don't you think Spotify will last long? It is legal and it's making money.
I have dozens and dozens of albums now for free instead of having to buy them, thanks to this most generous service.

The artist has made no money at all from that and will surely not allow Spotify to play them when they realise what is happening. No music = no Spotify.
The artists do get paid by Spotify, the service is free but you are not sticking to the terms and conditions of use and choosing to break the law.
Oh come on! You must be very naive if you believe most people just stream music from that site and don't copy it.
It's like them putting a pile of money on a table and saying "please just look at it and don't take any. We trust you". It's not going to work.
squarebear, it is preferable to the file sharing sites such as limewire, where the artist gets no monies at all.
You probably recorded music from the radio when you were a kid but that didn't bring the end of radio.
True and at least I know I am getting virus free copies from Spotify.
If the artist is happy with getting peanuts from Spotify or £10.99 from me for their CD then I am happy too.

Long may it continue.
Just so you know I use a music streaming site called Grooveshark and think it's great plus it's freeeeeeee! :)

Thanks might look at that. Got so far as registering with spotify but then came to a halt. It seems you do have to pay.
