Need help with SOUND

hi ive recently had my computer which is an xp rebooted everything is back to normal but i cant seem to get any sound playing

the speakers are connected and the light is on but everytime i try to play a song or listen to music no sound comes on, i cant even play a cd

basically there is no sound coming from the computer even when the computer is swicthed on or off no system sound is played

even when i do play something it comes up with an error message saying there is a problem with your device  

 can anyone help thankyou

when u re-install xp you sometimes have to re-install drivers also.

my pc uses 'on-board' sound and each time i re-install windows i also have to re-install my sound drivers so maybe that is your problem altho i get no error messages
