emoticons on my lg cookie

On my phone, when I text, I can insert an emoticon, but when i look at the list and after i've inserted it, it only appears as the brackets, letters and dashes etc, but when I send it to my dads phone, they appear as the image.

When my dad sends one, which he can view as the image on his phone, on mine it wil appear as the dashes brackets and letters etc, but why, when my lg cookie is in colour and has a decent image quality etc ?

Presumably because you phone doesn't support graphical smilies.

they are always sent as brackets etc and it depends on the phone how it interprets them and if it displays them as pictures or characters
