Laptop willl not connect to the Internet

My daughtr has a new Advent laptop and I cannot get it to connect to the Internet. I tried to set it up for our wireless network but it wouldnot accept the encryption key even though I tried several times. There are no MAC address issues.
As the wireless wouldn;t work then I tried hard wiring using the calbe that I successfully use to connect my old desktop to the internet but nothing.
I ran the diagnostics tool but got "troubleshhoter cannot solve the problem"
I really am stuck - is there anything that I have obviously missed.
The laptop is running Windows 7

When you 'hard wired' it are you sure that the router was actually connected to the internet?

I don't know windows 7 very well so I'm limited in my abilities to help you. Might be worth just making 100% sure the wireless network adaptor is on and using another device to enter the routers settings and chance the wireless network chanel. In my experience of XP and VISTA this can resolve a simple issue as the one you have. As for the problem not being resolved by connecting directly to the router via CAT5 cable I am mythed, unless the onboard network card, and/or drivers are not working (or; switched off) correctly. Sorry I'm unable to help you more.
