slow internet on netbook

I have recently purchased a SAMSUNG N130 netbook but have found that the speed of the internet is painfully slow, I reckon about a third of the speed of my computer. The signal from my computer is being transferred by virgin netgear router (54mbps).

Can anyone suggest what action I can take too rectify tthis problem.

Are you absolutely certain that it's connected to your own wireless router and isn't connecting via some other means...?
