Anybody got one, and would you recommend them?

Yes, I love mine. I can even 'borrow' eBooks free from my public library. Battery lasts weeks, can use it anywhere, no matter how bright the sunshine.
Mine is the original Sony eReader.

I've had a go with a kindle. They are very easy on the eye (unlike a computer screen or an iPad style device).

New price point is £109 - which is much more appealing that the old one (£300!)

If you want to have a look at one online there is an advert in Q&P for it on the right-hand side, it would be great if you clicked that to find it!

Good for holidays, bad for bookshelf makers.

slinky was on about getting one using her voucher scheme at Tescos and considering the rate I devour books I'm now considering one. The bookcases are groaning under the weight as well.
Do you buy them or just go for the free ones?

It is a big bugbear that most ebooks cost the same or more than the printed version. I think this is wrong because there are far less costs involved but the publishers make their money by receiving a per centage of the sale price.

They look interesting, I spend a furtune on books for the old man. I dont really understand the concept though. Once you buy the reader can you download the books of your choice for free?

mazie, you can legally get lots of free books, the vast majority of which are out of copyright.
If you want more modern books, you have to buy them or borrow them from your public library if it provides the service.

thanks hc, just seen your other post saying that e-books cost about the same as hard copies...If so, I cant see the point of getting one, well apart from storage

I have a kindle. I really like it. However, there is no sharing (unless it is linked to your account) or borrowing of books.

I was spending a lot of money on books, where normally I would go to library. I am still glad I have it though. Great for travel.
