Make sure that the Transfer Mode is set to "Ultra DMA", and not PIO for the channel and device settings for your DVD drive.
Other than that, a damn good defrag of your hard drive(s) is always a good idea.

I presume that you have your burner set as the master on the secondary IDE channel. Don't put it on the same channel as your HD. That'll cause problems. Try burning at slower speeds and see if that has any effect. Last but perhaps most importantly, is your media any good. The most accurately configured burning system isn't going to burn to dodgy disks.
