I friend of mine has a new weird process eating a lot of memory. It's called swwhost.exe. When this popped up in the process list his internet connection stopped working.

He's running windows XP. Any ideas what it is and how to get rid of it?

I've looked this process up and it appears to be a virus or something. There's loads of anitvirus programs you can get for free off the internet. I cant remember the URL's but look for AVG antivirus 7, Ad-Aware SE professional, Hijackthis etc. there are loads more and they should get rid of the problem

heres the link to avg that palfreyman mentions. this is a free version but very reliable in my opinion. http://free.grisoft.com/freeweb.php/doc/2/

He's already run AVG, Norton and Trend Micro on-line scan. None of them detect it.

He has also run AdAware, Spybot and Microsofts new spyware removal tool. None of them detect it.

I can find no references to it on Symantec's site or on Microsofts site.

Have you turned off Windows' System Restore and run "Hijack this" ?
