Burning DVD

I have a DVD which I want to lend to a friend. Rather than give them the original which I am afraid they might lose I thought I would burn a copy for them. I have Windows Media Player and although I know how to burn CDs for music I am at a loss. Have looked on the web, but it is all double dutch. Does anyone have an idiot's guide?

if it's a commercial DVD then just lend them the DVD...

It's a far easier option for a one off than ripping the DVD, removing the copy protection and re-burning it (and a marginally more legal option)

If it's a private DVD (i.e. non-commercial and with no copy protection) then using the software below will let you copy it.

Actually there are a lot of programs (like 123Burn, etc) that can now make copies of most copy protected DVDs. Those programs are now legal for burning a copy of your OWN DVD as a BACKUP for your OWN personal use (at least here in the US). Technically, lending your friend the original is the only "legal" way of doing it, although technical ways of doing it now abound.

The only reason I didn't want to lend the original out is that so many times in the past I have lent books, cds, etc and never got them back!

Well, so you want to copy the DVD for backup. I am using a tool called DVD Copy. You may give it a try. Download at:
