What make is better to get reasonable results and functions? I've had a quick look and the going price seems to be around £350-£400 for a cheap Sony or Nikon. (dont laugh you camera buffs!)

Don't know much about cameras, but go for a Canon or a Nikon. Give the Sony a wide berth (in my opinion).
Nowt wrong with Sony cameras, to be honest they will all do much the same things, it's personal preference really, do the controls fall easily to hand for you, is one menu system easier for you than another, overall size etc. etc. Best way is to go into a store and try them out, I'd consider Canon, Nikon, Sony & Olympus if I were you. PS. I'm a Canon user but that's only because that's what I chose to begin with and I've invested in too many lenses to switch now.
Good advice, Fitzer. It's what suits YOUR needs, not what the bloke behind the counter says.
