JPEG v MPEG

Please explain, if poss, and in as simple way the meaning of these two abbreviations and what do they do? I`m sure other users are just as interested if some are as dim as myself......but afraid to ask.

MPEG is a way thay guys store porn movies on their PCs ...

... usually in a file called "Office Admin" so that his wife won't bother to look in it.

JPEG is just for smutty pictures, in a file that the guy will have called "Accounts".

I just know that MPEGs are movie files, and JPEGs are picture files.

Doesn't work in our house jj, OH is very unlikely to look in any file which says "office admin", that'll be mine then....

JPEG stands for "Joint Photographic Experts Group" who are the people that created the standard, as Jayne correctly pointed out JPEG is an picture format, the important part is it's a compressed format though.

MPEG stands for "Moving Picture Experts Group" who are, again, the people that first created the standard. and as before, Jayne correctly stated it's a movie (and audio) file, and again the important part is that it's a compressed movie (and Audio) format.

When you take a photograph with your digital camera it uses some clever technology to compress the image to make it smaller. This technology is called JPEG and the file it produces is called a JPEG file (usually with a file type of JPG).

So a picture you take with your camera may be called holiday1.jpg

If your camera did NOT compress the picture it took it would be HUGE (file size).

Some professional cameras allow you to take a picture uncompressed (called a RAW file) and they are MASSIVE.

So JPG files are used to store digital photographs.

Just to add to Chucks answer.

An MPEG file will often have a file name with MPG (or maybe MPEG) at the end.

So a movie file may be called mymovie.mpg (or mymovie.mpeg)

Note there are other types of movie files, such as AVI, MOV etc, but they all do essentially the same thing, compress the file to make it smaller (without losing much quality).

Note the default in Windows is that it does NOT show the last part of the file name (the MPG or the JPG) so you may not see them.

But it is very easy to change Windows so you DO see them, and this can be very useful.
