Txt messages from USA.

This one baffles me. THe cost to send a txt from the USA is 49p. When I was there, I sent a photo message with a couple of lines and it didn't cost anything. Didn't send any txt messages, just picture messages, and no money was deducted from my phone. Can anyone explain that please?

Maybe you have a data allowance for using the Internet on your phone, and the pictures messages were included in that?
