how do i workthe barcode reader on my blackberry curve

i saw the the icon on the phone when i first got it but cant even find that now

my daughter says you have to go into Blackberry Messenger, and click on your own name at the top, and it says "display my barcode".

which i have now just seen being done on youtube

still not sure how to do the other thing

i dont even know where blackberry messenger is

i tried what i thought it was

but dont see my name at the top as suggested in first answer
