Most DVD Films are seperated into smaller sections called Chapters. This means you can select a starting point throughout the movie or select a specific scene. On most remotes there are twotypes of serch button that look similar. One will fast forward the movie, often at increasing speeds if you press it multiple times. The other skips forward by chapters, giving the impression that chunks have disappeared. I am generalising here now but all DVD's I have come across DO have a pause button. If you still have it , check the manual that came with the machin e to see where they have decided to hide yours. Sometimes companies choose design of their remotes over practicality. DVD's are Region dependant. The world is split into these regions and some will play on your machine and others won't. Most modern players are multi region compatible and should play all regions although some brands won't. Your club shouldn't really send you DVD's that are of a different region to the country you are in. I belive Europe is Region 2.

When you try to fast forward, make sure you press the button >> and not >>l
Lastly, if you bought your DVD player in the UK from any normal shop (ie not a dodgy import off the net or anything like that) it will be a region 2 player. Make sure the DVDs you try to watch are also region 2 (should tell you somewhere on the back of the case) and you should be fine.
