I have created a table in Word 2007and want to set it so that the row does not expand when I type in it and hit return. Can anyone save my sanity?

If I understand your question, the box is expanding downwards to fit in additional text? If this is the case then you need to set your options so that the text does not wrap, if it's too big for the box the "overflow" will just be hidden from view.

The row is large enough to accommodate the text but I am typing a number of single words, one below another. Each time hit return to type the next word that row expands and I want all the rows in the table to remain the same size regardless of what is typed in each. Sorry but difficult to explain.
right click on the cell and select properties, find the "automatically resize" option and take the tick out of it and you will also need to manually enter a size for the cell.
