I have an external dvd rewriter which I have now managed to get to record, but what programme can I use to watch the dvds on? I actually watch them on a normal machine but want to use laptop when am away. Windows media only plays the soundtrack and VLC doesn't support it! Am on windows xp and no instructions with the rewriter. Thank you.

You don't need extra software, just the correct codecs installed and then media player will play DVDs fine.

Thank you chuck, it kept banging on about codec but I didn't have a clue. Have now downloaded that, you are so helpful, thank you! x
VLC media player is free and you will probably get away without downloading any codecs. It's also less resource hungry than Windows Media Player.

VLC wouldn't play it!
Just as TTG says VLC
it always works on my "Windoze inferior software" pc and my "Superior linux software" pc
