i'm interested in buying a Samsung LE46C652 but I can only find it in 46"and I've only got space for a 40" - do they do a 40" version and, if not, can you recommend similar models?

You would only be able to find a LE46C652 in 46inch, seeing as that's a model number for the 46 inch version. try searching for a LE40C652.
