I use IE8 and just open the next tab along....
update internet explorer if you haven't cos it can be done easy. There's a tab at the top of your window and a tiny tab to the right - click on that to open it.
Tabbed browsing has been standard in IE since version 7 (Oct 2006). It can be enabled/disabled and its behaviour set via Internet Options.
Forget the tabs for a moment...

do a full windows update (start > all programs > windows update) and keep doing it until there are no more updates.

If you have not got IE 7 or 8 installed then you are way way out of date with your updates for windows and you will have loads of security holes.

Running all the updates will get you IE8 and give you tabs.
