television set problem - screeching noise
9 Answers
I have a fairly old Sanyo TV set, and tonight when I turned it on - it made a horrible loud screeching noise - very high pitched - as though it was about to explode.
I have just turned it off - but with Xmas coming - HELP - what can I do.
I am a single parent with kids looking forward to Xmas and watching the telly.

It's dead. Well, you might as well assume that anyway, because the cost of repairing it (if that's even possible) just wouldn't be worth it.
Join your local freecycle group, to see if there are any freebies on offer in your area:

Or check out Freegle, which is similar:

If you can't get a freebie, find out if there's a British Heart Foundation Furniture & Electrical Store near to you. Search here (ignoring the message you might see about the site needing a Google Maps key), entering your postcode and setting the drop-down menu to 'Furniture & Electrical Store':
http://www.bhf.org.uk...-are/the-bhf-map.aspx
They'll sell you a good quality TV (tested for electrical safety and with a short warranty) for a fairly small amount.
Otherwise, check your local 'free ads' paper to see what you can buy cheaply.
