Download and install the home edition (this is free) just download the basic one not the upgraded one and you won't get asked for your card details. I have this, all my family and most of my friends use it. It constantly scans and tells you if anything is virused before you open it (downloads)

very popular now and also free
AVG hasn't let me down so far - free download for basic version
I have Avast and it does the job free, and every time you switch on your PC a voice tells you that "Avast has been updated automatically"

But you can turn it off.

I would go for Microsoft Security Essentials.
A friend of ours writes programmes for computers and is an internet troubleshooter (no idea what that means)and he recommended Comodo. We have tried many others and find Comodo to be the best so far.

Avast is a great defender... but as for the 'virus database has been updated' used to make me jump (headphones on) so the audio off is a must.

As well as Virus Protection I think you may need punctuation protection as well!
