My portable preset radio volume switch has started to make crackling noises when i adjust volume. Is there any cure for this problem, or it is time to dump it. The radio was quite expensive and i would like to fix it.

Now now, no need for name calling...

A pot and a rheostat are different doc, you can use a pot as a rheostat, you can not use a rheostat as a pot though (you'll find you're missing a contact if you try)

I don't claim to be a great expert in this field (I can't remember the resister colour codes) but A level electronics is enough to know they are different.

Gosh, i was just looking for a little advise, not to cause a big row over a little switch. Maybe next time when i have a major problem the answers will really get nasty!
am I the only one to laugh at this - porkchop posting a crackling question?
sorry porkchop ;o)
pmsl, well spotted, ttfn
Don't start calling it "just a little switch" that'll start a whole new argument :)

Though just to throw a spanner in the works, if the volume control has little clicks you can feel as you turn it then it will be neither a pot or a rheostat, more likely a shaft encoder.

Though end of the day the exact details of what it is doesn't really matter to the question, the same answer apply for all.
A rotary encoder would be overkill for a radio volume, but yeah, a valid point, Chuck.
Depending on how mechanically adept you are...if the above suggestions do not work, you can replace the worn potentiometer with a new one, they are usually standard sizes. If you cannot get a new one the original can be restored for a time by dismantling it and rubbing the carbon ring with soft graphite pencil before of course re-assembling it. Tweaking the contact spring to give a little more pressure on the carbon ring will also help.

Thank you all. JOMIFL , you answer is very technical, i will clean the little switch with a pressurised cleaner through any gaps and if this does not work i will dismantle the radio to try other methods. If all this fails its off to the dump because my head cannot stand the crackling any more.
