As most of you know I am currently between jobs, and am considering most things. One of those things I may do is go back to University and do a degree or HND in Computer Studies. I love working with computers, and think I could do a job with them. Who do I see to go about this; would a careers officer be able to help me with this? One more thing; would my age go against me as I am now 38 years old?

I hope you will be able to help me with this query.

If you contact your most local unis/colleges and ask to speak to their Adult Ed office - most have one - they'll send you the info you need. Usually mature students are vey welcome as you're a lot more likely to commit to the course

You might want to consider the Microsoft Engineer exams (MCSE) - I know a coupel of people with this qualification, you can study via distance learning through a number of on-line colleges. Employers often look for the varying levels of MCSE for technical helpdesk jobs etc. Age is no barrier!

Unless they actually know anything! All of these Microsoft "certifications" are utterly worthless.

The entire set of questions and answers for each one is easily obtainable on the Internet. Possession of them demonstrates nothing more than the ability to retain a collection of valueless minutiae for a few hours, not that the possessor knows anything of any value.

I do a fair bit of technical interviews for companies, and any candidate's CV with more than three MCPs goes straight in the bin...
Well, I would argue that one, MR, that's not my experience, but we will agree to differ.

I possibly have not agreed with anything MR has said more! I've seen people who are MSCE that have been unable to sort out problems that just needed directX reinstalled!
Google degrees/HND's, see whats on offer at various UNI's. Now is the time to get your application in.
or even people that are MCSE.... oppps
