New TV with Freeview?

I've just got a Technika (Tesco) LCD TV with built in Freeview. I plugged it in and it auto found the 4 channels. But no Freeview. Is this because I have no digital signal? I only had a normal little tv before, with 4 channels- no Sky or anything. Or is there something I need to do or buy to get Freeview?
Thanks

Have you tried auto-tuning it?

Yes, it just didn't find any channels other than the normal 4
If it found 4 channels, then you have Freeview (all new TV's are digital i.e Freeview is now the standard). Why you haven't got the others I don't know, sorry. What aerial have you got?
Have you got digital turned on on your remote.......on mine you can select analogue or digital
Another thought - Does it also have an analogue tuner? You might be using that instead of the Digital one.
make sure you tune it to digital tuner, there will be an option there for either digital or analogue, I think you may have tuned to analogue!...........try tuning it again on digital!
Regulo has beaten me to it.

Normally, if someone reported only receiving a limited number of channels on Freeview my first response would be to ask them to check that they're actually in a Freeview reception area. (Some parts of the country still aren't):

Then I'd suggest that they'd probably need to upgrade their aerial installation.

However, if the only channels you're receiving are exactly the same as the principal four analogue channels, it suggests that it's because you're actually using an analogue tuner. While, as Regulo states, all new TVs can receive Freeview (or, for certain specialised TVs, FreeSat instead), many also have the ability to receive the older analogue channels.

You need to get the handbook out and look for the bit (probably somewhere under the 'Menu' settings) where it tells you how to switch between analogue and digital reception. You've almost certainly got the 'analogue' setting at the moment. Switching to 'digital' (and possibly retuning as well) should fix the problem.

I really must learn the art of précis!

While I was typing a long-winded answer, Welshlibranr has said the same thing far more concisely ;-)
Digital broadcasts are probably not in your area yet. I have a TV with built in Freeview which at the moment gives me the analogue channels although the EPG is ready to deal with the digital channels when they come next year.

Okay- I select Freeview from the Source menu and get a blank screen with Freeview: database empty and not available written in the box. The manual does not mention Freeview anywhere!!
Which model of TV is it?
Is it here?

Hi, if it's the same as mine it's got a button on the remote that says source, press that then change it to DTV and press OK then go to the menu to tune it in to the Digital channels. As Chris and others have said it has 2 tuners on it.

It's a Technika19-228 or 22-228, manual is for both. It has Freeview, DVD, USB that's all I know!
If it has the manual, it will tell you somewhere how to select the digital tuner, and then scan for available channels. The 19 or 22 refers only to screen size, otherwise the sets are similar in function.

Hi! I did try that- selecting digital and tuning for channels- no luck. I phoned the Tesco helpline and they said it was faulty and should bring it back. I'll try another telly!
Good luck. Let us know how you get on, won't you? It all adds to our collective knowledge. Learn something every day.
