Can anyone explain in laymans terms how a mobile phone is locked to a particular network?I presume there is some kind of network specific algorithem embedded into the phones memory of circuit board.Am I on the right lines with this?

It's the SIM that's locked normally.
Different networks can use different levels of locking.

Some phones now have locking in the firmware .. so only the manufacturer knows the codes .. even the provider cannot unlock a network locked phone.
