Is there a website where I can identify Caribbean fish (specifically Barbados)?
Google seems to lead to books or websites where you look up the name first. I just want to look at pictures to identify fish I`ve seen but I can`t find a simple site.
Your question made me think of the water proof slates that I use when scuba diving, but I can't seem to find and individual pictures of them....this is the sort of thing I mean though,,,,,,
Thanks for your replies. I`ll keep looking. I`m particularly interested in an ugly looking fish I saw resting on rocks. It was about 1 foot long, with bulbous bulges out of the side of it`s neck, fan like fins and a forked tail.
Thanks Divegirl. I know the slates you mean. I remember the trigger fish and being told they can attack your fins.
Thanks for that but no, it wasn`t a monkfish. It was in Barbados so it was a warm water fish. It was asleep I think. I`m not sure how fish sleep but it was motionless and pressed up against the rocks but it`s eyes were open. It didn`t react to me and I was about 2 feet from it. It might have been some sort of cat or dog fish but I don`t know that much about them. The rocks were covered with fine plant growth and the fish was covered with it too. It was so well disguised you would never know it was there.
Thanks divegirl but it wasn`t a Stonefish. The body was like a catfish. I have come to the conclusion that the only way I can find out is to go back to Barbados and have another look. Needs must. I`m looking for sponsors at the moment. :-)
Just for the record, I`ve just got back from Barbados after seeing another of these fish. I found out from a book at the airport that it was a Scorpion fish. Good job I didn`t touch it because they`re poisonous little critters.
