An 'optical' drive is simply one that uses laser light to read (or, where appropriate, to write) data from (or to) to a suitable disk. (Old-fashioned floppy disks were placed into magnetic drives. Your computer's hard disk is also a magnetic drive). So all CD and DVD drives are 'optical drives', irrespective of whether they're capable of writing data to disks.
