3 is a world leader in third generation (3G) mobile phone technology. The company is well known for its “free unlimited calls” approach using Skype and free 3 to 3 standard voice calls and texts. Their slogan “it’s good to be 3” reflects the high standards of service its customers are used to.

3 is a brand name under which several UMTS based mobile phone networks are operated. Hutchison Whampoa owns direct majority interests in the companies that operate the networks that are branded 3. Hutchison Whampoa provides 3G services to over 20.7 million people worldwide.

All 3-branded networks provide 3G technology. Like other mobile-provider Internet homepages, 3's portal is 'free to browse' for some content.

3 are challenging the telecommunications industry and regulators to completely overhaul the current charging patterns. They don’t think it should cost a fortune to use your mobile phone abroad, phone someone on another network or even move to another network.

In November 2007, 3 started to sell the Skypephone combining the functionality of a UMTS handset with free voice calls and instant messages from Skype. The phones are sold exclusively by 3 on contract and on a prepaid basis.
