The App Store

The App Store is a service for the iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad created by Apple Inc. which allows users to browse and download applications from the iTunes Store.

With over 5 billion downloads since its release in July 2008, the App Store has proven to be a huge success for Apple, simultaneously answering critics fears about digital distribution and allowing users to easily download and use applications on their iPhones.

Although it may seem like a large number of applications are designed to emulate the noises of machine guns and farts, if you can see past the cheesy games and novelties, there are thousands of well-designed, innovative and exciting applications.

There have been two billion app downloads this year so far and Apple expect to hit the 10 billion mark early in 2011.
