A. There are a few other packages out there that you might want to investigate. It will depend on where you live as to what services will be available in your area, so it is best to contact the service provider and find out if they cover your area. That said, some of the best deals on the market include the following:

NTL Home

Price: from 27.99 a month after installation

Website: www.ntl.com/locales/gb/en/home/ask/products-services.asp

Telehone: 0800 052 1815

NTL is currently promoting its Triple Digital Base Pack - this provides a phone line (which can be used for Internet access), cheap calls and cable channels for 27.99 per month.

If you call other NTL Home customers your telephone calls will be free (after a 4.9p connection charge) in the evenings and at weekends, and for other calls e.g. to BT customers it 321 Programme kicks in - which means that local and national calls cost 3p a minute in the daytime; 2p a minute in the evenings; and 1p a minute at weekends. Cheap international calls are also available through NTL's international call plan, for 2 per month.

As part of the this package you will automatically get BBC1, BBC2, ITV1, Channel 4 and Channel 5 plus a number of non-premium cable channels these include BBC Choice, BBC Knowledge, BBC News 24, BBC Parliament, ITV2, Sky One, Sky News, Bid-Up TV, British Eurosport, QVC, Shop!, The Studio and TV Travel Shop.

For Internet access, NTL Home customers can get unlimited access for an additional 10 per month.

So if you choose the Triple Pack it will cost 27.99 a month, plus an additional 10 per month for unlimited Internet access - bringing your monthly total to 37.99.

If you want a wider range of channels these can be added to your basic package for an extra charge e.g. Dual Movies Package costs 17 a month (Movie Max, Premier, Disney Channel and Sky Cinema); Dual Sports is 20 a month (Sky Sports 1, 2 and 3); or Sports & Movies costs 23 a month and gives you access to all movie and sports channels.

Please bear in mind that there will be a one-off installation charge for all non-NTL customers before you can get any of the above, this will set you back 75 or 50 if your home has had NTL installed before. Set top box rental is included in your monthly subscription.

Its Talk Anytime programme gives you the above Standard Package of digital channels and a phone line plus free local and national calls to other Telewest customers (after an initial 5p connection charge) running alongside Telewest's 321FREE telephone service - its price structure is as follows: calls cost 3p during the day (8am-6pm Mon to Fri); 2p during the evening (6pm-8am Mon to Fri and all UK public holidays) and 1p at the weekends (midnight Fri to midnight Sun).

Q. What about Sky Digital, doesn't it offer a good deal on its satellite service

A. It offers a great deal, but it comes without the telephone service. Basically it offers 96 different package options that range from 10 to 37 a month - with an on screen TV guide and access to TV email (through your existing phone line) banking and shopping through Sky Active.

You can get your installation for only 1 if you sign up for its Sky World or Family Pack online before the end of April - the web address to do this is www1.sky.com/skycomhome/getsky or telephone 08702 404040 for more information.
