I am planning a trip to germany just before christmas and to get the cheaper flights i only want to take handluggage with me but what exactly is the size that is allowed for handluggage i have a small suitcase would that count? or just a rucksack style size? thanks!

You must be sure that your bag will fit in that space - otherwise you'll have to put in the hold and be charged considerably extra. Checking in hold luggage is always more expensive at check-in than it is if you pay on-line beforehand.
not sure if it was true but there was something on a website yesterday saying ryanair staff are to get bonuses for catching people out with this. Over the years while standing in the queues going on flights I have seen them get more and more strict going along with the stand thing to measure and if it doesn't fit as mentioned you will be charged a very hefty price. Each site shows their companies measurements.
