Why do we want Jordan to grant him a pardon? I thought the idea was to get shot of him!

If he had been granted a pardon Jordan would no longer be interested in him and he could remain in the UK forever.

If he was granted a pardon there would be no need to present suspect evidence, obtained by torture, against him.

And if that was the case the courts here would probably allow his deportation.

Yes but a pardon means he will be excused all charges against him by Jordan. He could then remain in Britain.

The idea is to be shot of him and stop him coming back. That a senior judge thinks the case against him doesn't appear to merit the charge , gives a clue as to why a pardon was suggested. We don't like the idea of evidence obtained by torture being admitted, either. But anything will do, provided the man gets to Jordan.

But the only reason for extradition is that he has a case to answer in Jordan. If these cases are no longer justified why should they accept him back.

He wouldn't be extradited, he would be deported. But the result would be the same. He'd be out of our hair.

The evidence against him seems a hell of a lot weaker than that against Gary McKinnon.

Funny how people seem to think that judges are there not to follow the law but to reflect public opinion

Since when have we been a democracy? modeller, technically we don't even have a constitution - and Lincoln was American, as I am sure you are more than aware.

Precisely ! Democracy doesn't exist and never has . The concept is unworkable . Even a single definition doesn't exist there are hundreds.
Abraham Lincoln's is but one, albeit a famous one.
The same applies to the concepts of Justice ad fairness no two people will totally agree. So it is left to the judges and politicians to decide .
Abu Qatadas may still be here in 10 years time .

Lovers of referenda and democracy might look back to the original democracy, that of Athens. Everything there was decided by the mass vote but the vote was confined to citizens. Even the original democracy was not a democracy !
