Tips For A Northern Lights Trip To Norway In Jan/feb 2014

I am planning to do a Northern Lights cruise to Norway and I have done quite a bit of research but wondered if anyone had any top tips from personal experience? Eg suggestions on how best to dress for the weather, what to avoid and what they felt was a 'do not miss'.

for going ashore: lined waterproof trousers, and jacket, hat that covers your ears, warm gloves, i wore walking boots and they were adequate.

you will probably find it extremely warm on board boat.

For the trousers, do you mean waterproofs to wear over ordinary trousers or something else?

you can get waterproofs that are lined and they are more comfortable to wear than waterproofs over others. casual wear is the order of the day.

are you going in and out of fiords or straight up the coast?

hope you are luckier than us. there was very little snow when we went early feb 2013. no northern lights as it rained and was misty every night. no polar bears as it was much too warm for them. only about 6 english people on board the boat and the others were not norwegian saw a sea eagle for about 30 secs and a trip to tromso cathedral highlights of the trip. that and catching up with old uni friend who now lives in trondheim.

i still want to see the lights but think i will have to save up again and maybe go to northern finland or somewhere more likely than norway.

Whenever I read posts from ABers travelling to and in hope of seeing the Northern lIghts I realise how lucky I was.

I saw them when driving across Salisbury Plain.........scared the living daylights out of me!
