Grand Canyon West Rim - Skywalk
5 Answers
Has anyone been to the newly opened Skywalk on the West Rim of the Grand Canyon. The website looks very attractive and gives the impression there is plenty to do, probably enough to take up a day if staying in Las Vegas. Is it worth going, especially as it costs about 35 per person to get into the area and walk on the skywalk. We have already been to the South and North Rims of the Grand Canyon, Sedona and Death Valley, and are looking for something to take up a full day, outside of Las Vegas. We will have our own car so anything within reasonable driving distance. Ideas anyone.

The website 'gives the impression' that anyone can visit 'off their own bat', so to speak but they are a bit vague. Also someone I work with, said they'd heard that you can only visit it on 'organised trips' - so must admit not too sure. I think their website is a little out of date because they say the Skywalk with be 'officially opened late March - with many celebs, taking the first walks'..... but they don't seem to have updated it, to let the public know if this has happened yet. So, like you Janela, I'd be interested to hear of anyone who has visited it yet.
I think from the website, we have worked it out that you can go there by yourself in your own car, but have to buy a 'package' when you get there which includes entry to the Indian land, plus a trip around all of the sights there are there. This is a basic trip but has the option of adding a walk on the skywalk for an extra $25, for those that want to. Useful if some of the party want to walk and some that don't. There are also other things that can be added like horse riding. The package includes a meal also I think. Hopefully someone will read this who has been and can say if it's worth it. It has opened, our newspaper had a short article by one of the journalists who walked on it. then it opened to the public on 28th March. Will await any further comments.
Maybe you know this - this is nothing to do with Grand Canyon National Park - this is about 80 miles of that on Hualapai Indian reservation land that abuts to the south edge of the rim. You get to the site up a dusty track 50 miles long from Peach Springs, which is on the old historic Route 66. You may also be able to fly there from Vegas or South Rim airport. Its part of this tribes attempt to raise income from tourism, so its true you have to buy what appears to me to be an expensive package. personally I wouldn't touch it with a bargepole.
