Who's been there? The world and his wife from what I can see. The place is completely crowded with tourists. Try Macedonia if you must. Or Slovenia for a really civilised experience. It's like Tuscany without the Brits.

is this your advice having been thewillow or based on general observations?
Been to Slovenia and Croatia. Haven't visited Macedonia yet but hear very good reports of the country from friends who have been.
I've been to Zagreb and it's BORING.
I went there a few years ago with my girlfriend. The taxi driver on the way to Glasgow Central ( we went via Manchester) asked if we were charity workers!Dubrovnik is very pretty as are the islands nearby. Food is similar to Italy-good seafood and pasta dishes. They have nice wines and an ok lager called ojusko or something like that.It was fairly cheap in 2001 but I imagine prices are rising.Well worth a visit though.
Glad you liked my answer brawburd. If I remember correctly the airport was about 45 mins from Dubrovnik. We stayed in Mlini and travelled by motorboat to Dubrovnik. The boat service was excellent and it's worth visiting islands like Lopud. They've managed to repair the damage to the Dubrovnik rooftops but on the outskirts you can still see ruined hotels.Entertainment wasn't particularly inspired.Lots of eurovision type music and once we were reduced to watching a water polo match outside the hotel.Mlini versus Cavtat!Home win.I would say though that Dubrovnik is one of the finest cities in Europe.
I just came back, and it was great. Stayed in the Hotel Croatia. Literally 5 minutes from the airport, and it was great. Had loads to do there. Not much for younger kids, but i'm 16 and there's lots for kids my age. The sea is great, its quite cold, but calm and clear. We had to wait 2 hours at the border crossing coming back from Montenegro, so be prpared to wait. Not so bad in Bosnia. It wasn't crowded at all, a lot less tourists than Menorca and Portugal, but there are a wider range of nationalities. Food is great everywhere, but parkin in Dubrovknik, especially in July August is terrible. You'd be better of catching a bus.
