London Underground Stations - East of England Co-op Quiz
8 Answers
This quiz provides cryptic-type clues to 40 London Underground Tube Stations and I am stuck on four of them.
No. 5 is "You might take this to get to Chelmsford". Liverpool Street is the railway station for Chelmsford, but this would not really be "cryptic" as an answer. Is there another Underground station that might fit the bill?
No. 21 is "Needle Women" I can only think of "Bank" since the Bank of England is "The Old Lady of Threadneedle Street" but then the clue ought to be "Needle Woman" in the singular, surely?
No. 25 is "It's a rotten one". The answer might be "High" something or other, but I can't think of one that really fits the bill.
No. 32 is "Elderly Sorcerer". Is the name of one of the stations also the name of magician (like "Merlin") from folklore?
Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

"Aldwych" for 32 and "Pinner" for 21 seem to fit the bill perfectly, but is "Essex Road" strictly speaking part of the Underground System or just the Rail Network? I've located Essex Road station, but it doesn't seem to be on any list of Underground Stations that I've found. Perhaps the compiler was being a bit flexible because "Essex Road" sounds very right! Is "Borough" the answer to 25 because it is on Borough "High" Street or is there another connection tha I am missing?
See this for "Rotten Borough" - you will see the connection:

Rollo, many thanls for your further response. A most interesting article in Wikipedia - I won't forget that one if it ever comes up again!
The introduction to the quiz does not specify one way or the other, but I think it must include stations that are now disused because one of the answers (to no. 6 "Yuppies and Rangers live here") must be "Sloane Square" which I used to use occasionally but which I believe is also now defunct. On that basis "Essex Road" is clearly favourite. I must say, the history of the London Underground System is fascinating. I visited www.underground-history.co.uk as a result of all of this and became totally immersed!
