Traveling to Scotland, any ideas please?

My daughter and her husband want to travel from Suffolk to Scotland for a week, 10 days but, want to stop at places of interest along the way, like the Lake District etc.
Is there a web-site that gives you any ideas of where to stop and a scenic route not motorways etc.
I have looked but cant seem to find any?

My own inclination, for such a journey, might be to go via the Peak District. If you'd like some more exact suggestions, with a possible route worked out for your daughter, please post again, stating which towns they'll be travelling between and whether they want to do the journey in one day or to stop overnight at somewhere interesting.

My only suggestion from the info you've given would be when you get to Newcastle turn off the A1 and go up the A68 to Edinburgh the views as you come through the border regions are stunning. other than that, Enjoy Scotland, it's an amazing place.

Chuck, I may be biased, but I'd recommend the west coast rather than the east - the scenery is by far more beautiful and dramatic. The east coast is nice, but it lacks something.

I may not of taken the best routes when I've driven to Scotland on the west coast and I would happily take any suggestions of a route to take next time I drive up that way (which I hope it will be sooner rather than later)

but as trt is coming from Suffolk the east routes are more direct (admittedly he was asking for scenic rather than best, and as a local you would be in a better position to advise from experience than me)

We've driven from Suffolk to Scotland many times, and it can be done in a day but it's hard going. The A1/East coast route is most direct. When we drove that way we went all the way up to North Berwick, but you could stop at the Scarborough/Whitby area, or along the coast between Newcastle and Alnwick. There are some beautiful beaches along there. There are also pretty seaside villages along the coast between Berwick-upon-Tweed and North Berwick. I agree that the West Coast is prettier than the East Coast but there are some lovely places on the East Coast too. St Andrews and all the golf town are very good. It is easy to get from East to West from Edinburgh.

Taking the West route it is best to use the A14/M6 and it is probably quicker than the East route. There isn't really anywhere worth stopping until Lancaster and the Lake District. The M6 north of Lancaster is surrounded by countryside and it is very easy to get off for the Lake District. You enter Scotland at Gretna Green and the drive around the coast across to Stranraer and up towards Troon is a lovely one.
