I am flying with United, for the first time, and I have been told that they do not provide any meals for economy class customers. Is this so?

If you look under 'International amenities' you'll see a reference to 'Complimentary meal service' and 'Complimentary soft drinks, juices, tea and Starbucks® coffee'. You only have to pay for your alcoholic drinks:

I suspect that the information you've been given refers to Continental's domestic flights (where it would be correct).

Thank you Good Boy for such a swift response.
I have surfed the net trying to find out the answer. In one place I find that all international flights provide complimentary food for those at the back of the plane, elsewhere I find that only trans Pacific passengers get fed. What I was hoping for was that someone who had flown across the Atlantic recently with United, at the back of the plane, would let me know if United fed them.

Have a look here

which is from the United website.
I would be VERY surprised if they didn't provide you with meals. I haven't personally flown with United, but with Virgin, BA, Continental and American Airlines I got fed!

I have recently flown United between London Heathrow and Chicago. Very different service ex London and ex Chicago. As so often happens it is down to the crew on the day. You definitely get food and soft drinks but no alcohol unless you pay something around 5 or 6 dollars a time. On the way back I think they gave me a couple of alcohol freebies which was great!
