You can spend about 2 hours max at the caves and then visit the town of Nerja, which is picturesque. The caves are closed in the afternoon from 2pm-4pm. They are not suitable for pushchairs or people with mobility problems - lots of steps, but not tiring.
Another suggestion is to visit one of the villages inland. Mijas is very popular with coach parties but has nice little shops and bars.
Or Benalmadena Pueblo (which is inland, and not to be confused with Benalmadena Costa) which is another whitewashed village with real spanish bars and a pretty church. There is a very unusual folly built as a monument to Christopher Columbus who came from the village. It looks like a fairy castle. There is also a C. Columbus museum.
For a family night out, try Tivoli World at Arroyo de la Miel, just inland from Benalmadena Costa. It's a permanent funfair and opens about 6pm. Just near the entrance to Tivoli world is a cable car that takes you to the top of a nearby mountain, spectacular views over the coast, birds of prey displays and a cafe. Avoid going in the middle of the day when it gets spectacularly hot!
Another tip - have a drink/lunch at one of the bars at Puerto Banus, marina for the rich and famous. Designer boutiques, the biggest boats you'll ever see, flash cars, and it costs nothing to look. The is also a big department store Corte Ingles which has a big car park.
Enjoy!
